Like millions around the country, I watched with joy as the private plane carrying three hostages held in Russia landed on American soil around midnight. Second off the plane was New Jersey favorite son, Evan Gershkovich, a journalist with the Wall Street Journal who was on assignment in Yekaterinburg.
Evan had been held since March 2023 on espionage charges, the first time an American was charged with such a crime since the Cold War. Earlier this summer, Evan was found guilty in a hastily-held sham trial and sentenced to 16 years hard labor.
Throughout the ordeal, Evan seemed to keep his cool. I never saw a video of him upset. In fact, most of the photos and videos shared by Russia were of him smiling; something I’m sure annoyed Putin. Before he was released, Evan was required to complete some paperwork. It has been reported he requested a sit-down interview with President Putin before he signed off on the required Russian documentation. I heard one journalist refer to the request as “having chutzpah.” I would call it full-on Jersey attitude.
Seriously, I can’t think of anything tougher.
Watching him hug his mom and lift her up just warmed my heart. With all that has been going on in this country, I think we all enjoyed watching the love and appreciation family members had to finally have their loved ones home safe.
After the initial touchdown on American soil, the three were brought to Texas for a full medical evaluation.
I can’t imagine all they have been through during their incarceration and as great as the three of them looked last night, I’m sure they will have a lot to work through as they push forward and restart their lives.
From this Jersey Girl, I say welcome home, Evan.
