December 18th is an important day in New Jersey history. On this date in 1787, the Garden State became the third state to ratify the United States Constitution.
In what became our no-nonsense attitude, the representatives completed all the necessary tasks to ratify in six days. It is believed this was due in large part to the overall lack of enthusiasm for the Articles of Confederation. While an important step on the trail to full independence, this document created a limited federal government to a fault. Congress could not raise funds, regulate trade, or conduct foreign policy without the voluntary agreement of the states. Ultimately, this did not work.
New Jersey State Archives

Many of the original documents that tell the story of our state’s founding, governance, and more are found at the New Jersey State Archives in Trenton. I have had the opportunity to visit this special place and I highly recommend it. If you are a historian, researching your family history, or just want to learn more about our awesome state, the State Archives the place to visit. You can even do a lot of research online in preparation for your visit. As someone who has been involved with researching my family history for longer than I care to admit, I will also say the people that work there are incredibly helpful and patient. They truly have a passion for what they do and are eager to impart their knowledge with others.
The State Archives is also home to the documents related to New Jersey’s ratification of the Constitution. You can actually learn about the important role New Jersey has played since the beginning of our country.
So this is just another reason to celebrate why we are absolutely that awesome. From the founding of our country to today, Jersey has been right there showing the country how it is done.
